It's drilled into us in training and reinforced every time a DOT officer pulls us over. But ask a tow operator, a flatbed driver, or anyone who pulls vehicles or equipment regularly to walk you through their pre-trip, and the wireless tow lights almost always get treated as an afterthought — something you check only when you're already hooked up and ready to roll.
That's a mistake. Wireless tow lights are part of your lighting system the moment you put a vehicle behind your truck, which means they're a legal requirement, a safety device, and your liability shield rolled into one small magnetic bar. They deserve the same two minutes of attention as any other safety-critical piece of gear.
Here's how to fold them into a pre-trip that you'll actually do.
They are required lighting, not optional accessories
This is worth stating plainly because a lot of people get it wrong. The moment a towed vehicle obscures the towing vehicle's rear lights — and it almost always does — federal and most state regulations require that the rearmost vehicle in the combination display functioning brake lights, turn signals, tail lights, and (after dark or in poor visibility) clearance and marker lights as appropriate. A wireless tow light is the device that makes you compliant.
If your tow light fails on the highway, you're not just inconvenienced. You're operating an unlit or under-lit combination at night, which is a citable offense in every jurisdiction in North America and is a near-guaranteed problem if you're unlucky enough to be involved in a rear-end collision. The other driver's insurance company will find out your lights weren't working before you finish your second cup of coffee at the scene.

A good tow light pre-trip happens in two stages: a quick check of the unit itself before you hook up, and a functional test once it's installed on the vehicle you're towing.
Stage one: the unit, before you hook up
This takes thirty seconds and lives in the same mental slot as checking your trailer cables or pintle hitch. While the light bar is still in your truck:
Look at the lenses. Are they clean enough to actually be visible from a distance? A tow light covered in road grime from the last job puts out a fraction of the light it should. Wipe the lenses with a clean cloth before every trip, even if you don't have time for a full wash.
Check the battery indicator. Most modern wireless tow lights have a charge LED or readout. Confirm you have enough battery for the job ahead, plus a margin. A light that dies twenty minutes into a four-hour highway run is worse than no light at all, because you'll be the last to know.
Glance at the magnets and the rubber pads on top. Pads intact, no exposed steel, no debris stuck to the magnets that will scratch the customer's vehicle.
Look at the cable and connectors. Any damage, kinks, or visible corrosion that wasn't there yesterday gets dealt with now, not at the side of the highway.
Stage two: the functional test, after you hook up
Once the light bar is mounted on the towed vehicle and the transmitter is plugged in, do the lights-on walk-around. This is the part most drivers skip, and it's the part that catches the most failures.
Have someone in the cab — or use a wireless brake controller, a wedge under the pedal, or your truck's flasher controls — and run through every signal. Confirm:
Tail lights illuminate when the headlights are on. Brake lights come on hard and bright when the pedal is pressed. Left and right turn signals flash independently and at the correct rate. Hazard flashers work and flash both sides simultaneously.
Walk to the back of the towed vehicle and verify each one with your own eyes. Don't trust the indicator on the transmitter — the transmitter only knows it sent the signal, not whether the light bar received it and lit up correctly. Signal pairing problems, dead LEDs, dim sections, and water-damaged channels all show up at this step and nowhere else.
The whole functional test takes about ninety seconds. The first time you do it for real and catch a failed left turn signal before you pull out of the lot, you'll never skip it again.
Common failures the pre-trip catches
Knowing what tends to go wrong helps you look for it. The most common pre-trip catches on wireless tow lights:
Dead or low battery — by far the most frequent issue. Solved by a culture of putting the light back on the charger the moment the job is done, not "later."
Lost pairing between transmitter and light bar — most units pair automatically when powered on, but a weak battery in either piece, RF interference, or a damaged antenna can prevent it. The functional test reveals it instantly.
A single dead LED channel — usually the brake lights or one turn signal. Means the light bar has been dropped, has water inside, or has a failed driver chip. The unit can sometimes still pass casual inspection, which is exactly why it's dangerous.
A loose or weak magnet — a magnet that's lost some grip from rust under the rubber pad, or a mounting surface that's wet, dirty, or contaminated. Catching this in the lot is much better than watching your tow light skip down the highway in your mirror.
A damaged 7-pin connector on the truck — corroded pins, a bent housing, or moisture inside the connector causing intermittent operation. Often presents as flickering or one circuit not working. A dab of dielectric grease from your last maintenance session helps a lot here.
Make it part of the paper trail
If you're a commercial operator, write it down. Most pre-trip inspection forms have a "lights" section but no specific line for tow lights. Add one. It takes ten seconds to check a box, and that documented inspection is gold if you ever have to explain to an investigator, an insurance adjuster, or a court why your lights were working before you left and what you did to verify it.
For fleet managers: build "wireless tow light functional test" into the standard pre-trip checklist for every truck in the fleet that pulls anything. Don't leave it to driver discretion. The drivers who would have done it anyway will keep doing it; the ones who wouldn't have are the ones the policy is for.
What to do when something fails
The whole point of catching a problem in the lot is that you have options. A failed tow light at the start of a shift means you grab the spare set, swap to a backup transmitter, hard-wire a temporary light, or in the worst case delay the job until you have working equipment. None of those options exist when the light fails on the shoulder of an interstate at midnight.
Every truck that regularly tows should carry a backup tow light system. The cost is trivial compared to a single citation, a single accident, or a single missed job.
