Where should you mount your trailer connector on a tow truck | TowBrite

If you are building a new tow truck or remounting a used wrecker on a new chassis, you might have the opportunity select where to put your trailer plug.  It may be tempting to put it at the back of the truck, and that's perfectly fine if you plan to run with wired tow lights or connect directly to trailers.

However, if you plan to use wireless tow lights, consider one of a few options.

Install a hard wired transmitter in addition to a traditional trailer plug.  The hardwired transmitter can be placed somewhere out of the snow, ice and salt and will likely outlast your truck.  If your light pylon is fiberglass, that's a great place for it.  Just keep in mind that wireless signals do not work great in steel boxes.

Alternatively, having a connector underneath your light pylon is also a great option.  It shields it from road spray and gets the signal high up for best connectivity.

Finally, you might want to put it into your tool boxes, but make sure that the antenna is extended outside the tool box and that there's some kind of gromet in place to prevent it from getting cut by the sharp metal.

Remember, it's always best to keep your electronics out of the weather as much as possible!
