Upgrading the batteries on your wireless tow light | TowBrite

In most cases, it is possible to upgrade the batteries on your wireless tow light from lead acid to lithium.  TowBrite manufactures a kit convert their tow lights and those of competitors such as TowMate and Lite-It.  There are however a few considerations the need to be taken into account.

  • Cost:  Lithium batteries are more expensive than lead acid batteries.
  • Durability:  Lithium batteries usually last years and years.
  • Charging:  Make sure you get the correct 12v cigarette charger or charging controller for your batteries.
  • Waterproofing:  Most lead acid batteries are waterproof (they contain acid!), but most lithium batteries are not waterproof.  Make sure the battery that you've got is waterproofed.
  • Securement:  Make sure that you've got a good way to affix your lithium battery, you do not want it sliding around and damaging wiring.
  • Wiring:  You may need to do some creative wiring when installing an upgrade kit or making your own kit.

All in all, upgrading your wireless tow light to lithium is a worthwhile endeavor, but it may be a little more complicated than you anticipate.  Your local shop may be able to do this for you, or even better, you can send your tow light to TowBrite for servicing and upgrades.
