A good wireless tow light is one of the most useful pieces of equipment in a tow truck, on a farm, or in any shop that moves vehicles around. It's also one of the most abused. Tow lights live outdoors, get tossed in toolboxes, sit in salt spray, take impacts, and generally lead a hard life. The difference between a set of tow lights that lasts five years and a set that fails after one season usually comes down to a few minutes of regular maintenance.

Here's what actually matters.

Keep them clean

This is the part everyone skips, and it's the part that does the most damage over time. Road grime, grease, mud, and especially road salt are slowly eating your tow lights every time you use them. The salt is the worst offender — it sits on the housing, works its way into seams and connectors, and quietly corrodes everything it touches.

The fix is dead simple. After a job in bad weather, hose the lights off. A bucket of warm water with a bit of mild dish soap and a soft brush handles 95% of what you'll encounter. Pay attention to the underside of the housing, the magnet bases, and around the LED lenses where dirt collects. Rinse thoroughly and let everything dry before you store it.

Don't pressure-wash a tow light. Even on units rated as waterproof, a pressure washer can drive water past gaskets that handle rain just fine. A garden hose at normal pressure is plenty.

Be careful with brake cleaner around plastic

This one catches people off guard. Brake cleaner is a shop staple — it's cheap, it cuts grease, and it evaporates clean. So it's tempting to grab it for cleaning the lens or housing of a tow light. Don't.

Most brake cleaners, especially the chlorinated kind, will attack plastic. Sometimes the damage is immediate and obvious — the plastic clouds, crazes, or gets sticky to the touch. Other times it's slow: the lens looks fine after the first use, but a few months later it's cracked, hazy, or brittle. Either way, you've ruined a part that didn't need to be ruined.

Stick with mild soap and water for the housing and lens. If you need something stronger to deal with stuck-on grease or tar, isopropyl alcohol or a plastic-safe degreaser is the better choice. Save the brake cleaner for metal parts and bare electrical contacts where you actually need its solvency.

Apply dielectric grease to every electrical contact

If you do nothing else from this post, do this. Dielectric grease is a non-conductive silicone-based grease that seals out moisture from electrical connections without interfering with the contact itself. A small tube costs a few dollars and lasts for years.

The places it belongs on a wireless tow light system are the 7-pin (or 4-pin) connector that plugs into the truck, the battery contacts inside the magnetic light bar (if your model is rechargeable with removable batteries), the charging port on the housing, and any other plug-and-socket connection in the chain. Apply a small dab — not a glob — to the male side of each connection, then plug it in as normal. The grease squeezes into the contact area and forms a moisture barrier.

You don't need to redo this every week. Once a season is plenty for most users; once a year is fine for low-volume operations. Reapply any time you've had a connection apart for cleaning or repair.

The payoff is huge: dielectric grease is the single best defense against the intermittent flicker, dim lights, and complete signal dropouts that plague aging wireless tow light systems. Most of those problems aren't electronics failures. They're corroded contacts.

Inspect for corrosion and damage every time you put them away

Every time you finish a job and pack the lights up, take ten seconds to actually look at them. You're checking for:

The pins inside the truck-side connector — they should be bright metal, not green or white or crusty. A little discoloration is normal; visible buildup means you need to clean the contacts and reapply dielectric grease. Use a small brass brush or a contact cleaner spray (not brake cleaner) to remove corrosion before it gets worse.

The magnets and the steel cup that holds them — road salt loves to attack these. Surface rust on the magnet base is fine and expected, but pitting, flaking, or rust that's worked under the rubber covering means it's time to clean and recoat with a thin layer of automotive paint or rust converter. A magnet whose rubber pad has rusted off underneath will start scratching the vehicles you're trying to protect.

Damaged wires — run the cable through your fingers from end to end and look closely at every inch. You're hunting for cuts, abrasions, exposed copper, hardening or cracking of the insulation, kinks near strain points, and any spot where the jacket has been pinched by a tailgate or run over. A nicked cable is a future short circuit and a future water intrusion point. Patch small damage with quality electrical tape or heat-shrink, and replace any cable with serious wear before it fails on a job.

Water inside the LED lenses — hold each light up and look closely at the inside of the lens. You're checking for fogging, condensation droplets, water lines, or visible standing water. A little bit of fog that clears as the unit warms up is sometimes harmless, but persistent moisture inside a sealed LED housing means the gasket has failed or the housing has cracked. Once water gets in, it corrodes the LED solder joints and shorts the circuit board, and the unit's days are numbered. Catching it early means you can re-seal the housing; catching it late means you're buying a new light.

The housing seals — if your model has a removable battery cover, charging port cover, or any user-accessible panel, check that the gasket is intact, supple, and seated correctly. A torn or missing gasket is the most common reason water ends up where it shouldn't.

The battery itself — if your light bar or transmitter has a user-accessible battery, pull it out and look it over. You're checking for swelling or bulging (a swollen lithium battery is dangerous and needs to be replaced and disposed of properly), corrosion or white powder on the terminals, leaking electrolyte, dents from impact, or scorching/discoloration that suggests it's been overheating. A damaged battery doesn't get "watched" — it gets replaced. A swollen lithium pack can vent or catch fire, and it's not worth the risk.

Test the switches and controls

Working lights are no good if you can't actually turn them on. Once a season — or any time something has felt off — run through every switch and control on both the light bar and the transmitter. Toggle the brake function, the running lights, the turn signals, and the power switch. Each one should click crisply, hold its position, and produce the expected response from the lights.

A switch that feels mushy, sticks, requires multiple presses to register, or only works in a certain position is on its way out. Most are easy to clean with a shot of electrical contact cleaner sprayed into the switch body while you work the toggle back and forth — it flushes out grit and old grease. If that doesn't restore crisp action, the switch needs to be replaced before it strands you on a job.

While you're at it, do a full functional test with the lights actually plugged into a vehicle. Operate the truck's brake pedal, turn signals, and headlights and confirm the wireless lights respond correctly to each input. This catches signal-pairing issues and intermittent transmitter problems that a simple visual inspection won't reveal.

Don't forget the batteries

Rechargeable wireless tow lights have a battery somewhere — usually inside the light bar, sometimes inside the transmitter as well. These batteries don't last forever. Most lithium packs are good for several hundred charge cycles, after which runtime drops noticeably. If your lights used to last a full shift and now barely make it through two jobs, the battery is the most likely culprit, not the electronics.

Store the units charged, not empty. Lithium batteries hate sitting at zero for long stretches; it shortens their useful life dramatically. If you're putting a set away for winter or for the off-season, top them up first and check them every couple of months.

A simple maintenance rhythm

You don't need a complicated schedule. A rhythm that works for most users:

After every job in wet, salty, or muddy conditions, rinse and dry. After every week of regular use, do a quick visual inspection of cables, connectors, and magnets. Once a season — or four times a year if you're hard on the gear — pull every connection apart, clean the contacts, reapply dielectric grease, and check for corrosion in earnest. Once a year, replace any tracker batteries (see the related posts on AirTags) and inspect the housing seals.

Stick to that and a quality set of wireless tow lights will outlast the truck you bought them for. Skip it, and you'll be replacing them every couple of seasons whether you can afford to or not.

Wireless tow lights aren't fragile, but they aren't indestructible either. The enemies are water, salt, and corroded contacts — and all three are defeated by the same routine. Wash them with mild soap and water, keep brake cleaner away from anything plastic, slather dielectric grease on every electrical connection, and look at them often enough to catch corrosion before it spreads. Ten minutes a month buys you years of reliable service from a piece of equipment that earns its keep on every job.
